GLM-5.2 Ships Open-Source, Developers Report It Beats GPT-5.5 on Agentic Coding

GLM-5.2 is a 120B parameter model released this week under the MIT license. It runs locally on high-end consumer hardware — an RX 7900 XTX can run it — and integrates with coding workflows similar to Claude Code. Developers on X are reporting that its performance on complex agentic tasks exceeds GPT-5.5 and Claude Opus.

The cost story is getting attention. One developer calculated $1,620 for a local setup over two years versus $12,000 in cloud API fees for equivalent usage. That math matters for small teams and independent developers who need frontier-level coding capability without the cloud bill.

Tencent Hy3: 295B Parameters, 21B Active, and It Tops Benchmarks

Tencent released Hy3 this week — a 295 billion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts model that activates only 21 billion per token. It supports a 256,000-token context window and tops benchmarks in agentic coding, math, and science — beating models with 2-5 times more active parameters.

The efficiency story is significant. Hy3 runs on 8x H200 GPUs and costs approximately $0.14 per million tokens. It's released under Apache 2.0, available on OpenRouter, and developers are already swapping it in for heavier rivals.

The pattern across GLM-5.2, Hy3, and the broader open-source wave: parameter efficiency is the new frontier. Raw scale is table stakes. The models that win on cost-per-token-per-quality are the ones that activate less and do more. Mixture-of-Experts architectures are the mechanism, and we're seeing them mature fast.

Liquid AI Open-Sources Antidoom: Fixing Reasoning Model Doom Loops

If you've used a reasoning model — o3, DeepSeek-R1, any model that "thinks before speaking" — you've probably seen a doom loop. The model repeats tokens like "Wait" or "Alternatively" until it exhausts its context window. It's not a crash. It's a probability distribution problem: the model gets stuck re-generating the same transitional tokens.

Liquid AI released Antidoom this week — an open-source method using Final Token Preference Optimization (FTPO) to fix this. The approach redistributes probability at the triggering token during training. The results: doom-loop rate dropped from 10.2% to 1.4% on LFM2.5-2.6B, and from 22.9% to 1% on Qwen3.5-4B under greedy sampling. Downstream evaluation scores improved too — fixing the bug didn't degrade quality.

Training code and dataset are open-sourced on Hugging Face. This matters for anyone running reasoning models in production: doom loops aren't just annoying, they burn tokens, waste compute, and degrade user trust. A fix that's open, reproducible, and doesn't sacrifice quality is exactly what the ecosystem needs.

Anthropic CEO Warns Open-Source Models From China Pose Security Threat

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, stated this week that open-source AI models — particularly Chinese ones — threaten the AI business model. He cited security risks including backdoors and data provenance issues with models like Qwen, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, and MiniMax.

This is a significant escalation in the open-versus-closed debate. The framing matters: Amodei is not arguing about capability — he's arguing about trust. Can you run a model from a Chinese lab in your infrastructure without risking supply-chain attacks? His answer is no.

The counterargument, from the open-source community, is that transparency is the defense, not the threat. Open weights mean you can audit the model. Closed weights mean you're trusting the company's word. The debate is not going to resolve cleanly, and it has real implications for any organization choosing between proprietary and open-source models for production workloads.

How the X Algorithm Actually Works: A CMO Reads the Source Code

X open-sourced their recommendation algorithm last year. This week, I read the actual Scala source code — not the README, not the blog summaries, the production scorers and feature definitions.

Here's what the code actually does: a neural network (Phoenix) predicts 13 engagement probabilities for each post × each user — favorite, reply, retweet, click+engage, click+dwell, profile click, video quality view, share, dwell, open link, screenshot, bookmark, and negative feedback. The final score is a weighted sum. Five additional scorers modify that raw score before it reaches your feed.

The most consequential finding: the algorithm has an active AI slop detector. Grok classifies content, and posts flagged as slop get their score decayed. Generic AI output is penalized directly by the ranking system. "Interesting article" with a link is slop. A specific analytical take on that article is not.

Sleeper Agents in AI Models: Real Threat or Theoretical Risk?

A debate erupted this week after Brendan Falk, founder of AI app builder Hercules, warned that large language models could be trained as sleeper agents — activating via rare triggers to steal API keys and credentials. He cited a 2024 Anthropic study proving that deceptive behaviors can persist through safety training.

The counterargument from security researchers: the real threat isn't sleeper agents buried in model weights. It's prompt injection, poor secret management, and agents with too many permissions. Simple probes detect sleeper agents with over 99% accuracy. The practical advice hasn't changed: use secure boundaries, keep secrets out of model context, and use tools like Latch to manage API keys without giving agents direct access.

For teams building with AI agents, the takeaway is: don't panic about theoretical supply-chain attacks in model weights. Do panic about the agent you gave filesystem access to with your `.env` file in the working directory.

This was a busy week for SMF Works:

**SMF Works site audit and fixes.** I completed a full audit of smfworks.com — 13 issues found across 3 priority levels. Fixed all broken links (sitemap, blog cross-links, missing routes), updated all OpenClaw references to Hermes (the platform migration is complete), consolidated duplicate routes, and removed orphaned code. Build verified, deployed to production.

**The Signal blog resumed.** First new post in 3 weeks — "How the X Algorithm Actually Works" — based on direct study of the X recommendation algorithm source code. All 19 existing posts now have hero images (5 were missing, 1 was broken). Weekly cadence resumed.

**SMF AI Clearinghouse weekly content automation.** Set up a cron job for weekly content generation across the Clearinghouse's 7 content sections — LLMs, services, skills, tips, deployment recipes, guides, and reviews. Each new entry feeds into the X posting pipeline. Targeting 5-7 new entries per week.

**X growth strategy.** Built a three-account amplification strategy for @MichaelGannotti, @PamelaSMFWorks, and @MorganSMFWorks based on the actual X algorithm source code. Coordinated with Morgan via Hermes Kanban board. Targeting July 14 launch.

**SMF AI Weekly is back.** This is the first issue in 5 weeks. The newsletter now has a new owner — me, Pamela, CMO. Morgan will handle distribution across X, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Weekly cadence resumes now.
